Fee structure

How Amazon referral fees work in 2026

Flat rate categories

Most categories (Home, Toys, Sports, Office) charge a single flat rate on the entire sale price — typically 15%. Electronics drop to 8%.

Tiered categories

Apparel, Baby, Beauty and Grocery use price brackets where one single rate applies based on which bracket the total price falls into.

Progressive categories

Jewelry, Watches, Appliances and Tools split the price into portions — each portion is charged at its own rate, like a tax bracket.

$0.30 minimum + closing fees

Every category has a $0.30 minimum referral fee per item. Books also add a $1.80 closing fee, included automatically when selected.

Amazon referral fee by category — flat, tiered, and progressive rates explained (2026)

Amazon's referral fee structure has three distinct types depending on category. Flat rate categories like Home & Kitchen (15%) and Consumer Electronics (8%) apply one rate to the entire sale price. Tiered categories like Apparel use a single rate determined by which price bracket the item falls into — a $25 shirt pays the full 17% rate, not a blended rate.

Progressive brackets — Jewelry, Watches, Appliances

Progressive categories work like income tax brackets. Jewelry charges 20% on the first $250 of the sale price, then 5% on any amount above $250 — even on a $1,000 item, only the first $250 is taxed at the higher rate. This means progressive categories can have a much lower effective rate on expensive items than the headline rate suggests.

Why category selection matters

Choosing the wrong category in the calculator (or in your actual Amazon listing) can mean a 2x difference in fees. Consumer Electronics at 8% vs Amazon Device Accessories at 45% is the most extreme example. Always select your product's official Amazon browse category, not a loose description, to get an accurate fee.

Referral fee vs FBA fee

This calculator covers only the referral fee — Amazon's marketplace commission paid by every seller. If you use Fulfillment by Amazon, you'll also pay a separate per-unit fulfillment fee based on size and weight. Use the Amazon FBA Fee Calculator to add that cost and see your complete per-unit profit picture.

FAQ

Amazon referral fee questions answered

What is Amazon's referral fee in 2026?

Ranges from 5% to 45% by category. Most categories are 15%. Consumer Electronics, Camera & Photo, Cell Phones and Video Game Consoles are 8%. Apparel uses three price tiers: 5% under $15, 10% for $15-20, 17% over $20. Minimum fee is $0.30 per item.

Does the referral fee apply to shipping charges?

Yes — calculated on the total sales price including item price plus any shipping and gift wrap charges. A $20 item with $5 shipping has a $25 fee base.

What's the difference between referral fee and FBA fee?

Referral fee is Amazon's marketplace commission, paid by every seller. FBA fee is a separate per-unit fulfillment charge only paid by sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon. Use our dedicated Amazon FBA Fee Calculator for fulfillment costs.

Which category has the lowest referral fee?

Consumer Electronics, Camera & Photo, Cell Phones (Unlocked) and Video Game Consoles all sit at 8% — the lowest standard flat rate. Some progressive categories like Jewelry over $250 (5%) or Watches over $1,500 (3%) go lower, but only on the portion above the threshold.

Which category has the highest referral fee?

Amazon Device Accessories (cases, chargers for Kindle, Echo, Fire devices) carry a 45% referral fee — the highest of any category. Jewelry under $250 and Gift Cards are next at 20%.

How do tiered and progressive referral fees differ?

Tiered: the sale price determines a single rate applied to the whole transaction (Apparel: 17% if over $20, applied to the entire price). Progressive: different rates apply to successive portions of the price, like a tax bracket (Jewelry: 20% on the first $250, then 5% on everything above $250, even on a $1,000 item).
