How Shopify fees work

No sales commission. You pay a monthly plan ($39–$399+) plus a payment-processing rate on each order — lower on higher plans, and lower with Shopify Payments than an external gateway.

Fee structure

How Shopify fees are calculated in 2026

Not a commission

Shopify never takes a cut of your sale price the way a marketplace does. You pay a monthly subscription plus a per-order payment-processing rate — that's the entire fee model.

The plan changes your processing rate

Shopify Payments online rate: 2.9% + $0.30 (Basic), 2.7% + $0.30 (Grow), 2.5% + $0.30 (Advanced), 2.15% + $0.30 (Plus). Higher subscription, lower per-order cost — the trade-off only pays off above a certain volume.

Shopify Payments vs external gateways

Use Shopify Payments and you pay one fee. Use PayPal, Stripe, or another processor instead and Shopify adds its own surcharge (2% Basic → 0.2% Plus) on top of that processor's own rate — two fees stack instead of one.

The subscription is real money per order too

A $39/month Basic plan is $1.30/day, invisible on a slow month and meaningful on a fast one. Enter your estimated monthly order count below to see the subscription amortized into a true per-order cost — most fee calculators skip this entirely.

Worked example

$85 item, $8 shipping — Basic plan, Shopify Payments

$85 item + $8 shipping, Basic plan ($39/mo), Shopify Payments

A $93 order total. Basic plan's Shopify Payments rate is 2.9% + $0.30 — no separate commission, no listing fee.

Revenue: $85 sale + $8 shipping $93.00
Shopify Payments: 2.9% × $93 + $0.30 −$3.00
You receive $90.00
Item cost ($28) + shipping cost ($6) −$34.00
Net profit $56.00

On the Grow plan (2.7% + $0.30) the same order costs $2.81 in processing instead of $3.00 — 19 cents more in your pocket per order. At 200 orders/month, that's $38 saved on processing, almost exactly offsetting Grow's $66/month higher subscription. Below that volume, Basic wins; above it, Grow starts to.

FAQ

Shopify fee questions answered

How much does Shopify take per sale in 2026?

Nothing, directly — Shopify doesn't charge a sales commission like a marketplace. You pay a monthly subscription ($39–$399, or custom pricing on Plus) plus a payment-processing rate of 2.15%–2.9% + $0.30 per order if you use Shopify Payments. On an $85 sale with $8 shipping on the Basic plan, that's $3.00 in processing — the rest is yours.

Is Shopify Payments cheaper than PayPal or Stripe?

Yes, in almost every case. Using an external gateway means paying that gateway's own rate (Stripe is 2.9% + $0.30, PayPal is around 2.99% + $0.49) PLUS Shopify's own surcharge on top — 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus. Shopify Payments avoids that surcharge entirely, so unless you have a specific reason to use another processor, it's the lower-cost default.

Which Shopify plan is cheapest for a small store?

Basic, almost always — the $39/month subscription is the lowest, and the 0.4-percentage-point rate difference to Grow only pays for itself once you're processing enough volume that 0.4% of your monthly revenue exceeds the $66/month price gap. That breakeven is roughly $16,500/month in card-processed sales.

Does the monthly subscription count as a 'fee' per order?

Not officially, but realistically yes — it's a real cost of every sale, just spread across all of them instead of charged per-transaction. Enter your estimated monthly order count in the calculator to see it amortized into a true per-order number alongside the processing fee.

What about Shopify Tax, chargebacks, and other extra fees?

Shopify Tax charges 0.35% per order in applicable US states once you pass $100,000 in trailing annual sales — most smaller sellers won't hit this. Chargebacks run a flat fee (refunded if you win the dispute) and vary by country. This calculator focuses on the two costs that apply to every single order: processing and the amortized subscription.
