Upwork replaced the flat 10% freelancer service fee on May 1, 2025 with a VARIABLE 0–15% fee set per contract — Upwork shows you the exact percentage before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and it is then locked for the life of that contract. There is no single correct rate any more: it varies by category, demand, and factors Upwork does not publish. This calculator defaults to 10%, which most freelancers report as their typical effective rate, but you should override the rate field with the exact percentage shown on your own contract. Enterprise contracts and Freelancer-Initiated Direct Contracts are exempt from the variable model and carry their own fixed rates.
